Facial recognition camera app

THE PROBLEM:

While watching movies, people want to know why actors look familiar, so they waste precious minutes of movie time on searching IMDB, or pause it, making their friends wait for them to finish.

THE SOLUTION:

A facial recognition app that instantly makes you go “Oh… so that’s where I know them from!”.

THE USERs:

I was inspired by my parents always asking me about actors when we watch TV so I built the personas around them.

Dad:

  • Likes to watch action movies & older movies

  • Always asks who the actor is, even if he’s never seen them before

  • Confuses similar actors

  • When he has a successful guess, he feels successful and proud of himself

Mom:

  • Serial TV series binger - mostly crime & drama

  • Always trying to find more shows to watch

  • Not great with technology

  • Prefers to watch shows with actors she recognizes

Considering them lead me to solutions such as:

  • Simplicity

  • High contrast colors

  • Considering human mistakes (like suggestions for similar actors)

  • Watchlists (because my mom would watch a new show just because of of the actors was a handsome doctor in Grey’s anatomy)

  • Determining what information is important to the users (my dad cares a lot about bithplaces and ethnicities for example.
Next time I should add a “Are they jewish?” section just for him...)

RECOGNIZE

Point the camera at the screen and it instantly recognizes the actor.

Alternatively, search for movies or actors, with the ability to save to your personal zone with your faves & watchlist.

LEARN

View the recognized actors’ profile basic information, what they're most known for (with options to save for a faves/watchlist) and additional links.

FORGIVE

The "Not ___?" button leads to the end of the page, “Might also be”, with similar actors.

This allows both the app to correct mistakes and help the user if they were actually confused about similar, yet different actors.

I started by making a low fidelity mock,
to determine the app’s information architecture and flow.

challenges

Some of the challenges I faced were:

  • What is the most important information?

  • Are icons readable enough by themselves or should I I add text?

  • What if the users confused different actors?

  • What if the app made a false recognition?

  • How do I make navigation easy for everyone?

  • How do I encourage users to use the lists?
